Fernie Northern Lights
Fernie lies on the Elk river, along Canada's southernmost east-west transportation corridor through the Rockies that crosses the range via the Crownsnest Pass.
Founded in 1898 in a lush valley of ancient cottonwoods and giant Western red cedars, the historic and charming city of Fernie has a population of almost 5000 people. A substantial seasonal population swells the city during the winter months.
People come here for the powder – an average winter will dump almost 9m/29ft of the stuff on Fernie Alpine Resort. As the warmer months approach, Fernie comes alive with flower-trimmed downtown patios and guided and self-powered adventures and new possibilities are revealed. These include fly-fishing, hiking, river rafting and mountain biking.
And of course, if you're lucky enough, you can get to see the northern lights!!
